Privacy Policy
Last updated June 21, 2026
Walt is built for the conversations people most want to keep private. This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, how it's protected, and the choices you have.
The short version
- Your messages, the shared Overview, and any files you upload are encrypted at rest under per-group keys.
- Sign-in is passwordless — we email you a one-time link, so there's no password to leak.
- We don't sell your personal information, and we don't use your private content for advertising.
- To make Walt work, your conversations are processed by our AI provider and stored with the service providers listed below.
- You can ask us to delete your data at any time at hello@dearwalt.com.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details — your email address (used for the passwordless sign-in link) and the display name you choose.
- Content you create — the messages you send, the reconciled Overview Walt maintains, and any files you upload (such as PDFs, images, or CSVs).
- People you invite — if you invite someone, we process the email address you provide to send the invitation.
Information we collect automatically
- Basic usage and security logs — standard request data (such as timestamps and error logs) used to operate and protect the service.
- A lightweight presence signal — we record when you were last active so Walt knows whether to nudge someone in-app or by email, rather than emailing people who are already here.
How your content is protected
Content is encrypted at rest using envelope encryption. Each group has its own random data-encryption key; your content is encrypted with that key (AES-256-GCM), and the key itself is stored only in wrapped form, encrypted under a master key that lives outside the database. The practical effect: a database dump, a storage leak, or even a leaked service key exposes only ciphertext.
What's encrypted: message content, the shared Overview, the summaries extracted from your files, and the file bytes themselves.
What stays readable (metadata): the information needed to route, join, and sign you in — identifiers, group and member records, timestamps, file names and types, and the names and email addresses on an account.
How we use your information
- To provide Walt — replies, the reconciled Overview, and sync.
- To send transactional email — your sign-in link, invitations, and the occasional nudge when someone needs your input.
- To keep the service secure, reliable, and working as intended.
- To respond to you when you contact us.
AI processing
Walt's replies and its continuously reconciled Overview are generated using Anthropic's Claude models. To do this, the relevant conversation content is decrypted on our servers and sent to Anthropic to produce a response, then re-encrypted at rest. We don't use your private content to train models.
Service providers
We share information only with the providers we rely on to run Walt, and only as needed to deliver the service:
- Supabase — database, authentication, realtime sync, and file storage.
- Anthropic — the Claude models that power Walt's replies and reconciliation.
- Resend — delivery of transactional email (sign-in links, invitations, and nudges).
- Netlify — hosting and content delivery.
When Walt emails someone a nudge, the email carries only a short, non-sensitive teaser — never figures or the underlying private message.
Sharing and disclosure
We do not sell your personal information. We don't share your private content except with the service providers above to operate Walt, when you direct us to, or where we're required to by law.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. You can ask us to delete your account and associated content at any time by emailing hello@dearwalt.com; we'll action it within a reasonable period, subject to any legal obligations to retain certain records.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information. To exercise any of these, email hello@dearwalt.com and we'll help.
Children
Walt isn't directed to children under 18, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we'll update the date above and, where appropriate, let you know in the product. Your continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
